Announcing the Andrea M. Lawrence Special Book Collection Sale

ESLT is pleased to announce that the book collection of Andrea Mead Lawrence will be available for sale at the Mammoth Lakes Library over Thanksgiving weekend. A world-class skier and two-time Olympic gold medalist, Andrea was also a champion for conservation. She was the driving force in the implementation of CEQA (California Environmental Quality Act), and – as one of ESLT’s earliest board members – she worked to preserve farms and ranches, scenic spaces, and important habitat in the Eastern Sierra.

Andrea came to the region on her first backpacking trip with a friend from southern California. They hiked into Garnet Falls and Andrea felt "an incredible sense of autonomy and transcendence. It was euphoria," Lawrence recalls, "pure euphoria. So it was actually backpacking that brought me to the Sierra."

Surprisingly, Andrea’s first encounter with the Eastern Sierra was not as a skier; instead, she first came to the region on a backpacking trip. After hiking into Garnet Falls, Andrea felt “an incredible sense of autonomy and transcendence. It was euphoria.”

Growing up in Vermont, Andrea Lawrence was born with the mountains in her blood. After moving to the Eastside, she served our community for 16 years as a Mono County Supervisor. Andrea was a board member in ESLT’s early days, and worked tirelessly for our mission for several years before leaving to start her own organization, the Andrea Lawrence Institute for Mountains and Rivers (ALIMAR). She brought to ESLT the energy of a champion athlete, decades of conservation experience, and a deep love for this special region we call home. Although she passed away in March of 2009, her legacy lives on in the thousands of acres ESLT has permanently preserved, as well as in the inspiration that her dedication and perseverance instilled in all who knew her.

Between 12pm and 5pm on Friday, 11/29 and Saturday, 11/30, the Mammoth Lakes Library will be showcasing her book collection. Generously donated by the Lawrence Family, the collection includes books on the Olympics, skiing, conservation, and poetry, and features rare editions inscribed to Andrea by renowned colleagues. All proceeds from the sale will go to support library services and programs. We hope you’ll join us at the book sale as we celebrate the life and legacy of Andrea M. Lawrence!

For questions about the sale or about library policies, please contact the Library, (760) 934-8670.
